Welcome to GCIL
We're glad you found us
We know that sometimes the language used around disability, support, or rights can feel like a different world — full of acronyms, unfamiliar terms, or systems that aren’t always clear.
That’s why we’ve put this page together: to give you a straight-up explanation of some of the words and ideas you might come across here, and to let you know what to expect when connecting with us.
Whether you’re looking for support, information, or just want to understand more about what we do, you’re in the right place.
Some terms you might hear
(And what they actually mean)
We try to keep things clear, but now and then you might come across terms that are more technical or used in the social care system.
Here's what they mean in everyday language:
SDS
(Self Directed Support)
A way for you to have more control over the care and support you receive — there are four options, and you can choose what works best for you.
PA
(Personal Assistant)
Someone you choose and employ (or who’s employed on your behalf) to support you with day-to-day tasks. You’re the boss.
Supported Person
The person getting care or support — usually that’s you.
Payroll
We can help with the part of managing your support that involves paying your PA — including their wages, tax, and National Insurance.
Carer
This usually refers to a family member or friend who supports you without being paid.
Support Worker
A similar role to a PA, but usually employed by an agency or organisation. We don’t use this term at GCIL, because it doesn’t reflect the same level of personal choice and control.
ILF
(Independent Living Fund)
Extra funding that some disabled people get to help them live independently — not everyone is eligible, but we can advise if you are.
Direct Payment
Money that’s paid to you (or someone you trust) so you can arrange your own care and support, rather than the council doing it for you.
What to expect when you get in touch
Whether you're reaching out for the first time or just exploring your options, here’s what you can expect from us:
- A real conversation. You’ll speak to someone who listens, not just runs through a checklist. We take time to understand what matters to you.
- No pressure. You can ask questions, explore options, or just get some information — it’s completely up to you.
- Straight answers. We’ll explain things in plain English, and if something’s not clear, we’ll try another way.
- Support that works for you. If you want help applying for support or managing your own services (like hiring a PA or dealing with payroll), we’ll work with you to make it as straightforward as possible.
- Information in the format that works for you. We can share things in accessible formats — including Braille — and Easy Read options will be available soon. Just let us know what you need.
- Respect for your choices. You stay in control. We’re here to support your decisions — not make them for you.
