The Social Model of Disability

The social model of disability emphasises that people are disabled not by their impairments, but by barriers in society.

These barriers can be physical, such as inaccessible buildings, or attitudinal, like stereotypes and discrimination.

This model shifts the focus from “fixing” individuals to creating an inclusive environment that supports everyone’s participation and equality. By challenging these barriers, we can build a more accessible and just society for all.
