Mandy’s story: Finding purpose through a new kind of role

Mandy was working as an accounts assistant in the aviation industry when she started looking for a new direction. She wanted something more meaningful — a role where she could make a real difference in someone’s life.

With no background in care, Mandy wasn’t sure she had the right experience. But when she saw an advert for a Personal Assistant (PA), it stood out. She decided to take a chance.

A personal connection, not just a job

Becoming a PA turned out to be the perfect fit. Unlike working in a large organisation, this role gave Mandy the chance to build a one-to-one relationship with James, the person she supported.

She received hands-on training, got to know James as an individual, and quickly saw how much value she could add to his everyday life.

The role became more than just a job — it became a partnership. Mandy’s days were filled with connection, learning, and the joy of being part of someone else’s journey.

A life-changing shift

Coming from an office environment, the transition into care was a complete change — and a rewarding one. Mandy discovered that you don’t need formal care experience to be a great PA. What mattered most was empathy, trust, and the willingness to support someone in living the life they choose.

GCIL continues to support Mandy and other PAs, making sure they have the guidance, training, and resources they need to thrive in these vital roles.
